Ariadne 300 dpi

Ariadne Greek Goddess of the Labyrinth and Minoan Goddess of Crete.

Known as The Pure One and the Holy One. Daughter of Minos, King of Crete. There are many different versions of Ariadne’s story, she is a goddess of true love, courage, introspection, and rebirth. She leads us into the Labyrinth to meet our “Minotaur”, to go through the process of going deep into the uncertain in order to find ourselves again. In some of the versions of her story, we find themes of abandonment and heartbreak, sacrifice of family of origin for true love, life, and death as she dies and dives deep into the underworld to give birth (cycle of life/underworld).

One story tells us that Ariadne was in love with Dionysus and they had secretly married. One day, when Minos, her father was choosing his usual 7 men and 7 women to be sacrificed in honor of his son who had been killed, Theseus spoke up and offered to kill the Minotaur in exchange for his freedom and that this ritual would no longer be practiced. Some say Ariadne fell in love with Theseus and thus helped him, but I believe that she helped him in exchange for marrying her, as her way out and into the arms of Dionysus.

Ariadne helped Theseus by giving him a sword and a ball of thread (in some stories, a crown of bright jewels) so he could find his way out of the labyrinth once he slew her half-brother, the Minotaur.
Afterward, Theseus leaves her on the island of Naxos where Dionysis meets her and takes her into a happily ever after life -gifting her the Corona Borealis to be worn as her crown, and he being the most loyal of all partners, making theirs a true love story.

In the Odyssey, we find that Ariadne is killed by Artemis and in other versions, we learn that she committed suicide because she was heartbroken about Theseus’ abandonment, especially after she had sacrificed her relationship with her family for him. In this version, we find that Dionysis travels into the depths of Hades and brings her back along with his mother.

Call upon Ariadne:
-When going through troubled times.
-When needing to figure things out to make important life decisions.
-To help you in slaying “the Minotaur” – helping you face your fears, your past, your pain in order to push through and come into the light and freedom of being.
-To find true love.
– To assist with problems related to alcoholism .

At her Altar, make offerings:

-Fairy lights, pretty bright crowns to represent the Corona Borealis (Northern Crown).
-Wine of all kinds.
– White and blue flowers, especially white Roses and Carnations.
-Beautiful thread and string

Ritual:
Make a Labyrinth by drawing it on paper, use clay, or with small stones in your yard. Make it in her honor as an offering and a prayer to assist you in going deeply into the depth of your soul, into the scary places – slay the Minotaur – and follow her signs and symbols to bring you back out into the light. The light is there, waiting for you…. but you have to go through the darkness, through the process of the labyrinth – there is no way out, but through.

The Labyrinth represents the journey to our own center and back again out into the world both literally and metaphorically. This is an awakening process, that is not necessarily about wading through the darkness in order to “fix” it, instead, it is about rising above it. It is about raising ourselves so high that the darkness has no choice but to fall away.

All my art is made with great intention and prayer to bring you Love, Peace, and Joy.
