Description
THIS LISTING IS FOR A REPRODUCTION ON CANVAS OF MY ORIGINAL MEDUSA OIL PAINTING
Medusa is one of the most famous figures in Greek mythology, a Gorgon with snakes for hair and a gaze that could turn people to stone. Before becoming a monster she was a beautiful woman and a priestess of Athena. After being assaulted by Poseidon in Athena’s temple, Medusa was punished and transformed, making her story one of tragedy and injustice.
Unlike her immortal sisters, Medusa was mortal, which made her both vulnerable and relatable. Her fearsome appearance isolated her, but it also protected her.
Medusa was eventually killed by the hero Perseus, who used a mirrored shield to avoid her deadly gaze. Even in death her power endured, her blood giving rise to the winged horse Pegasus, and her head became a weapon. Today, Medusa represents more than myth: she reflects how power, fear, and beauty, especially in women, are often misunderstood.
