ASIBIKAASHI (SPIDER WOMAN) PENDANT NECKLACE
There are many stories about Spider Woman, or Grandmother Spider throughout different tribes in the Americas, always someone to turn to as a helper and wise leader.
Known as Asibikaashi, the Sacred Mother of the Ojibwe people (Chippewa) of Southern Canada and Northern USA, she is a unifying force, a grandmother figure, powerful through her love for her family, her commitment to her descendants and her reverence for her ancestors. Call on her energy to help with family matters, groups, workplace, and other situations that call for the unifying of people, to bring strength through love and connection.
Inspired to maintain the unity of her people, while also protecting them, she created the tradition of weaving Dream Catchers (in Ojibwe, the word ‘asabikeshiinh‘ is the inanimate form of the word for ‘spider’), inspiring women, especially mothers and grandmothers, to weave protective spider web charms for children.

The Objibwa tell the story of Goddess Asibikaashi (Spider Woman) who together with Wanabozhoo brought the sun to the people. Asibikaashi still takes care of her people today. as she travels from one home to another to entrap bad dreams and protect from evil.
Dream Catchers are usually made of willow hoop, on which is woven a net to represent a web made with eight points where the web connects to the hoop, each for Spider Woman’s eight legs, and is decorated with sacred items such as feathers and beads. The bad dreams do not penetrate the web, but the good dreams can come through the center of the web. At dawn, the bad dreams disappear, it is said that the sparkle and splendor of dew on a spider’s web at the first hint of sunlight is the bad dream disappearing.
